Il Mercato Ristorante

$-$$, Italian, Halifax

Fodor's Review:

Enter this Italian eatery at your own risk: the gleaming display cases of antipasti and desserts -- including the zuccotto, a dome of chocolate and cream, and the gelati and sorbetti -- are sure to tempt. In the heart of the downtown shopping district, Il Mercato is an ideal lunch stop but come early for dinner, because this hopping place does not take reservations.

Terrible and Disappointing

Posted by prayformojo from Yarmouth, NS on 10/9/07

This was the biggest disappointment I've had in a Halifax restaurant in a very long time. My wife and I went for lunch and decided to share the risotto croquettes and a pizza. The croquettes were appallingly bland, with an artificial sauce that reminded us both of Chef Boy-R-D. The pizza was described as "topped with buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil and tomato". I envisioned a classic Margherita, fresh slices of tomato with whole basil leaves and fresh mozarella. As a bit of foreshadowing, a server rushed in to replace my wife's dropped soup spoon, and I joked that the pizza was a particularly soupy one. It was no joke when the entree arrived. Our server set before us a pizza crust covered in an astonishingly unappealing soup of orange sauce, liquid cheese and green oil. One taste confirmed that the "tomato" mentioned in the menu was canned crushed tomato, and that the "fresh" basil must have referred to a freshly opened packaged of dried basi. The cheese may have been decent for all we know, but there was so much of it and it ran so rapidly off our slices and the remaining pizza on the platter that it was unpalatable even to look at. We each had a bite, looked down at the platter that was now one half pizza crust, one half goopy liquid ingredient runoff, and called our server to take it away. I enjoy pizza in a lot of forms, from classic minimalist Italian styles to modern gourmet creations to good old North American smothered in ingredients monstrosities, but this I could not touch. I'd take a slice the horrible mass-produced chain joint creations over this. It was, simply put, the worst pizza I've ever seen.

Romantic atmosphere---service lacking

Posted by shiregirl from Richmond, Virginia on 10/9/07

The food was great....I got shrimp linguine and my husband got rigatoni with pancetta and goat cheese. Our waiter though, asked us immediately when we sat down what we wanted to drink, and we said water since we always like a glass of water. We like to choose an entree before making a wine selection though, but didn't get a chance to say we might like some wine. The waiter looked annoyed at our choice of water, whisked away our wine glasses and wine menu, and then left us alone for about 10 minutes before coming back for an appetizer order. The rest of the service wasn't any better. We noticed he was friendly with other tables...perhaps he just didn't like us. However, the food was very tasty.
