The Azuero Peninsula and Veraguas Places

La Arena

This small, traditional town has been producing pottery since colonial times—and perhaps earlier. Much of the ceramic work replicates pre-Columbian designs, though the local artisans also produce more modern pieces. The town is most famous for its traditional tinajas, ceramic jugs or pots used to store water, which make lovely vases but are tough to get home in one piece. The Carretera Nacional runs right through La Arena 2 km (1 mi) before Chitré, and the traffic slows here since the street is lined with shops and pedestrians.
