Casa del Horno Review

The impressive rooms in this restored 19th-century building two blocks from the Plaza Catedral are a seamless mix of old and new. The ancient stone-and-brick walls, polished wood, and photographs of traditional Panama, intermingle with modern touches such as iPod docks and well-stocked wine fridges. All of the suites have a separate kitchen, living room, and bedroom, and most have tiny balconies overlooking the ruins across Avenida B. Two third-floor "penthouse" suites have wooden lofts with king beds and a bedroom below, two bathrooms and a hot tub. Casa del Horno means "Oven House," since it was originally a bakery; the patio that once held the ovens is now part of the Italian restaurant, L'Ostería. It's a short walk from the Casco Viejo's attractions, but too close to a roof-top bar, which is a noise problem for the rooms in back on weekend nights.
