Los Quetzales Lodge operates a 1,000-acre private reserve inside Parque Nacional Volcán Barú, a 20-minute drive, or 30-minute hike from the lodge. The reserve has well-maintained trails through the cloud forest, one of which leads to a small waterfall, and all of which pass moss-laden scenery. It is home to more than 100 bird species, including the resplendent quetzal and 12 kinds of hummingbirds. You must be accompanied by one of the reserve's guides. Lodge guests are transported to the reserve every morning for $5. Non-guests pay $20 transport, but it's an easy 30-minute hike.
