Sports and the Outdoors
Macca Bite's lodges lie near some of the archipelago's best dive sites and offer daily snorkeling excursions and kayaking. Tranquilo Bay also offers jungle hiking, sportfishing, and surfing.
Costa Rica Border Crossing
Bocas del Toro lies geographically close to the Costa Rican beach towns of Puerto Viejo and Cahuita, but traveling between the two isn't as easy as it could be. It usually takes four to five hours to make the trip by land, though it can take longer due to infrequent bus service from the Costa Rican border post of Sixaola. From Bocas, take a water taxi to Almirante, where share taxis frequently leave on the 20-minute trip to Guabito, on the border with Costa Rica. It takes about 30 minutes to cross the border, which includes walking across the Sixaola River on an old railroad bridge. (A new bridge is on the drawing board as of 2012.) After that, you have to wait for the next bus to Limón, or San José, all of which stop at Puerto Viejo (2 hours) and Cahuita (2½ hours). Keep in mind that Panama is one hour ahead of Costa Rica.
