Fodor's Expert Review Hacienda Sacnicte

Carretera a Tekal de Venegas, Km. 5, Izamal, Yucatán, 97541, Mexico

Three miles north of town, this hacienda (whose name refers to a local white flower) dates from 1811, but it's been restored to strike a perfect balance between the old and new with beautifully appointed suites and spacious bathrooms. The dramatic yet warm suites have contemporary paintings, antique mirrors, polished cement floors, and handcrafted Mexican furnishings. The bathrooms have vanity areas and walk-in showers built with Mayan stones. Be sure to take a tour of the sprawling grounds landscaped with bougainvillea, hibiscus, tamarind, and lime and orange trees. The patio hammocks are great for an afternoon nap after a dip in the pool. Meals are served on the veranda at a 14-person mahogany table or in the original chapel. Despite modern touches throughout, the owners have managed to maintain much of the historical integrity, including the old murals in the dining room.
