Mérida

Carriage Travel

One of the best ways to get a feel for the city of Mérida is to hire a calesa—a horse-drawn carriage. You can hail one of these at the main square or, during the day, at Palacio Cantón, site of the archaeology museum on Paseo Montejo. Choose your horse and driver carefully, as some of the horses look dispirited, but others are fairly well cared for. Drivers charge about $15 for an hour-long circuit around downtown and up Paseo de Montejo, pointing out notable buildings, and providing a little historic background along the way. An extended tour costs $22.
