Overlooking an immense blue lake, the town of Catemaco is unquestionably the most popular vacation destination in Los Tuxtlas. Not everyone comes for the breathtaking views, however. The cool, gray fog that slips over the lake provides the perfect setting for the region's most famous attraction: the brujos (witches) who claim to be able to cure whatever ails you. Conventional medicine failed to penetrate this jungle area until the 1940s, so the folk traditions have survived, making use of herbal remedies (typically using basil, rosemary, and other ingredients of doubtful origin) to cure diseases and get rid of evil spirits. Catemaco is the place to go for a consultation with a brujo for a ritualistic cleansing. This costs anywhere between $2 and $20, depending on your ailment, which may range from misfortune in love to financial hardships to health problems. The cost also increases according to the brujo's assessment of how much you are able to pay.
