Border Crossings

Border Crossings

There are several border crossings, but most people entering Sonora from the United States do so at Nogales, south of Tucson, Arizona. Highway 15 begins at Nogales, continues south through Hermosillo, and reaches the Mar de Cortés at Guaymas, 418 km (261 mi) from the Arizona border. You don't need a car permit unless you are traveling south of Ciudad Obregón. Permits cost $25 if you stay within the state, and $31 if you plan to travel elsewhere in Mexico. Make sure you check in with Mexican immigration before leaving Nogales to get your six-month tourist visa, which will cost $27.
