San Miguel de Allende and the Heartland Places

Zacatecas

A Good Walk

Start your tour at the Plaza de Armas, the city's center, with stops at the impressive Catedral de Zacatecas 25 and the Palacio del Gobierno 26. Across the street from the plaza are two beautiful colonial buildings, one of which is the Palacio de la Mala Noche 27. Go to the Plaza Santo Domingo, two blocks west of the cathedral, to see the art in the Museo Pedro Coronel 28 and the baroque Templo de Santo Domingo 29 next door. To visit the museum of the other Coronel brother—both were equally fanatical art collectors—return to the cathedral, turn left on Avenida Hidalgo, and walk about 1 km (½ mi) north of the plaza to the Museo Rafael Coronel 30.

For a longer walk (or, if you're feeling winded, a quick taxi ride), head south on Avenida Hidalgo until you come to Juárez, then go right (roughly west) up the hill, passing the several-block-long Alameda park and the Social Security Hospital to get to Mina El Edén 31. After touring the mine, you can take an elevator up to Cerro del Grillo (Cricket Hill) and catch the Teleférico 32 cable car across the city to Cerro de la Bufa 33, the site of Pancho Villa's famous battle.
