Why We Like It

For its style and elegance. Royal Hideaway Playacar is a good example of a hotel that understands it doesn’t need to be huge to offer the best service. We love its gastronomy and its perfect location.

Fodor's Expert Review

This is a romantic upscale hotel where class and elegance sets the tone for everything else. Located in the most exclusive gated community in Playa del Carmen, it offers both privacy and closeness to everything that a bustling town like this one has to offer. A distinguished hotel with European feeling.

You Should Know Right in the heart of Playa del Carmen, the location of the Royal Hideaway means that a diversity of quality shopping and nightlife is in the nearby area, but that comes at the cost of privacy and intimacy. If you want a secluded hotel for your vacations, this one may not be your best option.

Room

The décor of these rooms reminds to that of the large estates in the outposts of the British Empire of yesteryear. An elegance so refined that the big resorts of today just can’t understand. All rooms come with King size bed or two double beds, jetted tub and balcony or terrace. Some rooms enjoy VIP services, such as Jacuzzi, private butler and personalized express check-in and check-out options.

Bathroom

Separate shower and hot tub are the norm among the bathroom of these suites. They come in classic marble and include two bathroom sinks. The Bulgari toiletries are a reminder of the high-end category of the Royal Hideaway.

Lobby

The lobby is a palace-like space with long windows that lighten up the whole room. Outside, the view of the manicured gardens is both majestic and relaxing. A grand staircase adds a Belle Époque accent to the place.

Pool

Of the six swimming pools featured, two enjoy ocean views, three include relaxation pools and then there is the infinity pool which comes with a waterfall, music and bar service.

Tip The garden pools offer a more serene atmosphere to unwind in a private and quiet setting.

Spa

The Retreat is a small but complete Spa that offers quality services and personalized treatments. Not the highlight of the hotel, but quite a serviceable wellness center.

Gym

As with the Spa, this gym is small but accomplished. Not a lot of equipment though. The laminate-wood floor seems to send the message that this is a place where you can workout but not sweat. All very posh and neat.

Dining

The dining offer here is outstanding. Among the six restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world, award-winning Azia may have the most refined dishes. However, nothing can compete with the intimacy offered at Las Ventanas Chef’s Table, where you will enjoy 6 or 12 course tasting menus while interacting with the Executive Chef and his team. Guests even receive a Certificate of Attendance for this original gourmet experience.

Drinking

During daytime the place to go to enjoy a cocktail is Deck bar, located by the beach. If you’d like to re-create one of the best English traditions, Teatime might be for you, open from 4 to 6 pm every day. Allegria and Las Ventanas lounge bar offer top-shelf drinks and music for the evening hours.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel is located in the gated community of Playa del Carmen and within walking distance to the acclaimed Fifth Avenue. Cancun International Airport is just 60 minutes away by car, and most of the parks, ruins and other attractions in the area may be reached by car in a time of under 50-minutes.

Restaurants

There are so many restaurants to choose from in the Center of Playa del Carmen that choosing one may be a difficult task. El Tenedor (25-minute walk) might not be the biggest eatery in town, but it has won its fame for great seafood, excellent service and surprisingly decent prices. If you want to try some real Mexican food, where locals eat, make a line at El Fogón (15-minute drive). Some people say, they have the best tacos in town.

Bars

You will find plenty of bars and discos in Playa del Carmen, however, if you don’t want to waste even an hour of sun tanning, visit Wah Wah Beach Bar (30 minute-walk). Take off your shoes, grab a lounger, and enjoy cocktails, pizza, ocean and sun. If you want some more typical entertainment, Coco Bongo (35-minute walk) has made a name for itself. Some people argue that their shows are better than the ones in Las Vegas.
