Café des Artistes
Café des Artistes Review
Several sleek dining spaces make up the original, downtown restaurant Café des Artistes; the most beautiful and romantic is the courtyard garden with modern sculpture. The main restaurant achieves a contemporary Casablanca feel with glass raindrops and tranquil music. In either area, choose an appetizer, entrée, and dessert from the three-course bistro menu. We recommend the creamy soup of smoked chipotle chilies followed by a fresh fillet of fish cooked in one of several Mexican styles, and finishing with the crème brûlée. Also within these walls, Thierry Blouet's Cocina de Autor (closed Sunday and in September) is a limited-seating restaurant pairing four- to six-course tasting menus with or without wines. Decor is restrained, with a waterfall garden behind plate glass taking center stage. In these restaurants, drinks add significantly to the price of the meal. Many diners end the night at the clubby cigar bar or Constantini Wine Bar, which offers some 50 vintages by the glass as well as distilled spirits, appetizers, and live music most nights of the week.

We chose the prix fixe menu, selecting 3 courses /w wine pairings...this was to total approx 2,000 pesos for 2 people. The waiter suggested before dinner drinks...perhaps a bellini? Then before dessert they brought up a complimentary cheese plate with 3 bottles of port to choose from. After these 4 drinks and 2 espressos the bill climbed to approx 3200 pesos. They should be more forthcoming with their drink prices...those 4 drinks cost an extra one hundred dollars. The portions were very small and the venison that my friend chose as an entree was over cooked. The timing between courses was not good either - there was too much time waiting between courses (and the restaurant was nearly empty). Paying $300 USD for a meal in Mexico is crazy (it's got to be over-the-top great). This was mediocre. I live in New York City and these are New York prices. There are a lot of great restaurants in Puerto Vallarta for much better value...don't bother with this one.

Well I have to say this is the only restaurant i would dress up. It is a very romantic setting. The bisque soup was served out of a pumpkin, the food was very good, but very pricey but that is expected!! But worth it too! We went to Cafe for our anniversary, i emailed them for the reservation, they treated us like King and Queen, for dessert they brought out a mirror filled with different desserts with Happy Anniversary written in Chocolate. I was very impressed!! Worth the money!!!

If you just happen to have a couple of hundred dollars per person to blow, by all means this is the place to do it. It is beautiful and the food is sometimes quite good but it is crazy expensive and the service can range between flawles and "who the heck are you?" Be sure to be dressed to kill or get the cold shoulder. All in all, not worth the money or attitude.

We visited Cafe des Artistes for our girlfriends 4oth birthday celebration. We sat in the courtyard which is a must. The indoor decor is lovely as well, so don't be disappointed if it rains, it makes you think of the city, very chic. Our service was attentive, our martinis wonderful, wine from South Africa sublime, food, all fish dishes, was unbelievable and the dessert for the birthday celebration was magnificently presented and decadent. The price was very fair for the quality of food, service and atmosphere that we received. Go to de Santos rooftop lounge for a drink after, a very hip spot.
