Gloria Whiting has owned this Old Vallarta original, which opened in 1955, for about 25 years, and some guests have been coming forever. That explains why most of the guests and staff seem like old friends. The Chez Elena restaurant, the unadorned rooftop bar, and the best rooms have nice views of the bay and of the city's red rooftops. Come to rub shoulders with Europeans and others who appreciate a bargain and a bit of history. Rooms are plain and without amenities, yet the traditional brick ceilings give a homey feel. Pros: Downtown location overlooking the bay; deep, grottolike pool; free Wi-Fi. Cons: Short but steep walk or drive from downtown; no lounge area around pool; no a/c.
