Vallarta's banda municipal serenades its citizens Thursday and Sunday evenings between 6 and 7, sometimes a bit later. Couples dance around the main plaza to cumbias (a distinctive style of popular Latin dance music that originated in Colombia), emanating from the central kiosk. Everyone's welcome to join in, and most of the dancers are just regular folks, both visitors and vallartenses, having some fun. Some days, however, the band plays danzón, a complicated, stylized box-step that originated in Cuba and is best left to those who know the steps.
