Fodor's Review

Near the malecón's north end, this world famous franchise restaurant with a fun-loving atmosphere has a bit of a sea view from its second-floor dining room and a Caribbean flavor. Specials vary by season; seek out the roast pork, the Cuban-style paella, or the pork loin in tamarind sauce, and order rice, salad, or fried plantains separately. Like its Havana namesake, La Bodeguita sells Cuban rum and cigars, and the music (canned during the day, live at night)—like the cuisine—is pure cubano. During the day comrades hunch over their laptops to use the free Wi-Fi; it opens at 9 am and is open most nights until past midnight. Try the mojito, a signature Havana drink of lime juice, sugar, white rum, and muddled fresh mint leaves. Offering two-for-one beers at twice the normal restaurant price is bogus, however.

Beware - Smoking is Allowed

While finishing our dinners two nights ago, two of the diners at the next table lit up cigars (and the tables are quite close together) - despite the prohibition of smoking in restaurants in Mexican law. Shortly thereafter, we were offered the opportunity to buy Cuban cigars at our table. When talking with restaurant staff, they said that they had some sort of special permission to allow smoking. While I doubt that, they also said that they do

not maintain a non-smoking restaurant; smoking is allowed throughout. As we do not like second-hand smoke, we won't be back; if you do go, be aware of what you may experience.
