With its classic central courtyard, beamed ceilings, and colonial charm, La Provincia fulfills the expectations of those looking for a bit of old Mexico. But it's also one of the city's most modern hotels, so although rooms have carved-wood furnishings and colorful tile floors they also have modern conveniences like flat-screen TVs. The hotel's location—equidistant from the zócalo and Santo Domingo church—is unbeatable. It's on a busy street, but you'd never know it by the quiet in the courtyard and rooms. Pros: Relaxing atmosphere, pretty rooftop terrace, friendly staff. Cons: Rooms don't get much natural light, a bit pricey, understated decor.

This hotel was a mistake. Great location and breakfast included sounded great, but the cramped, windowless room, terrible small hard bed, lack of shower door and aloof lack of service, made this a regret. We could have got a lot better for the money.
