One of the world's top surfing beaches, Zicatela boasts cream-colored sands that are battered by the mighty Mexican Pipeline. In the third week of November, international surfing championships are held here (followed by the even more popular bikini contest). Regardless, the beach is just about always filled with sun-bleached aficionados of both sexes intent on serious surfing. Huts right on the sand serve refreshments sporadically, but Calle del Morro, Zicatela's main street, is lined with hotels and restaurants providing shade and sustenance on a more regular basis. There are often lifeguards on duty. Even when the waters appear calm, the undertows and rip currents can be deadly. If you have any doubts about your prowess, settle for watching the surfers.
