A string of villages can be found off Carretera 131, which runs south from Oaxaca City. About 12 km (8 mi) southwest of the city is Arrazola, where you'll find the delightful alebrijes (angels, devils, and all sorts of creatures carved out of light, porous copal wood). These brightly colored figures, from tiny to tremendous, are decorated with dots, squiggles, and other artful touches. This craft was developed by Arrazola's best-known artist, Don Manuel Jiménez, and almost everyone in town has jumped on the bandwagon. As you wander along the streets, some people may invite you into their homes to see their work.
