Zaachila was an important center of Zapotec civic and religious authority at the time of the Spanish invasion. On Thursday, oxcarts loaded with alfalfa or hay head for the area's liveliest livestock market. Get here before noon, or there won't be a pig left in the poke. The town, which is 17 km (11 mi) southwest of Oaxaca on Carretera 131, is known for its stately church, the Temple de Santa María Natividad, which sits on the main square.
To get to Zaachila or any of the villages along Carretera 131, take a bus from the second-class terminal or from a terminal for the Añasa bus line at Calle Libertad 1215, at the corner of Calle Arista.
