With its classic central courtyard, beamed ceilings, and colonial charm, La Provincia fulfills the expectations of those looking for a bit of Old Mexico. But it's also one of the city's most modern hotels: rooms have carved-wood furnishings and colorful tile floors and flat-screen TVs, among other modern amenities. The location—equidistant from the zócalo and Santo Domingo church—is unbeatable. It's on a busy street, but you'd never know it by the quiet in the courtyard and rooms. Note that all but one of the double rooms have king-size beds, and the room with a double bed is discounted, so reserve it in advance if you are interested in saving.

This hotel was a mistake. Great location and breakfast included sounded great, but the cramped, windowless room, terrible small hard bed, lack of shower door and aloof lack of service, made this a regret. We could have got a lot better for the money.
