This ultrahip hotel has won awards for its innovative design. You'll find ingenious materials throughout the hotel—80% of which is recycled—from the used tires on the spongy lobby floor to the rooftop lounge chairs made from boxes that were once pickup truck beds. The roof also has two small pools made of recycled oil tanks, and a small bar where Playa's young and trendy meet up with hotel guests for late-night drinks. Guest rooms, though equipped with plasma TVs and DVD players, are designed to look very basic, with plain cement walls, exposed plumbing, and rubber curtains made from inner tubes. All come with retro amenities like beach balls, swim fins, and Polaroid cameras. Although a DJ spins music outside your door, the soundproof walls ensure a peaceful night.
