After the success of his restaurant in nearby Puerto Morelos, former Ritz-Carlton chef, John Gray opened this small place in the heart of Playa del Carmen. Stop in for a drink at the well-stocked downstairs bar here or go upstairs to the enjoy some of the finest dining in the city. The pasta in rich cheese sauce with grilled shrimp and truffle oil is an excellent option, but the menu is constantly changing, so ask about the daily special.

I must say that unless you can get a seat indoors, the atmosphere is not that great. I will say that the food, however, is some of the best I've had in Mexico. We've come to Playa del Carmen a couple times and eat at John Gray's at least twice. If you have any doubts about the quality of food, we ran into a regular diner named Jacques Pepin last night and he was having a conversation with the owner. If Mr. Pepin can enjoy it, i most certainly can. If you truly enjoy fine food, this is the place. If you are more interested in quantity, then perhaps you should try and find somewhere else.

We were really looking forward to an exceptional dinner at this restaurant. We chose to sit outside as the inside restaurant isn't very interesting. Well, the outside isn't very interesting either, as it doesn't seem to have an area defined for dining at this restaurant. It feels like you just sat down at an outdoor food court and someone comes out to serve you. People actually walk through the tables to get to the places next to the restaurant.
The food was disappointing as well. I had the duck that was just rubbery and overcooked. My husband had the rib-eye that was overwhelmed by the asian/garlic sauce. I didn't find any of the restaurants in Playa to have the perfect combination of great food, great atmosphere and great service. But, there are enough other restaurants in Playa to have either better food or better atmosphere.
