While the rest of the coast has been caught up in development fever, Puerto Aventuras has been quietly doing its own thing. It's become a popular vacation spot, particularly for families—although it's certainly not the place to experience authentic Yucatecan culture. The 900-acre self-contained resort is built around a 95-ship marina. It has a beach club, an 18-hole golf course, restaurants, shops, a great dive center, tennis courts, doctors, and a school. The Museo CEDAM displays coins, sewing needles, nautical devices, clay dishes, and other artifacts from 18th-century sunken ships. All recoveries were by members of the Mexican Underwater Expeditions Club (CEDAM), founded in 1959 by Pablo Bush Romero. North end of marina. 984/873-5000. www.puertoaventuras.com. Donation. Daily 10-1 and 3:30-5:30.
