Many resorts are in remote areas; if you haven't rented a car and want to visit local sights or restaurants, you may find yourself at the mercy of the hotel shuttle service (if there is one) or waiting for long stretches of time for the bus or spending large sums on taxis. Smaller hotels and inns are often family-run; a stay in one of them will give you the chance to mix with the locals.
