Mexico City Restaurants

Sanborns

Sanborns Review

The Casa de los Azulejos (House of Tiles) houses one the first of the Sanborns in the country. Now the popular stores-cum-restaurants owned by billionaire Carlos Slim, populate every major town in Mexico. The menu plays it safe with non-spicy Mexican dishes and international options like burgers, soups, and club sandwiches. Though the food isn't stellar, this is a popular spot among Mexicans for coffee and a snack.

Just what Fodors says is very accurate. The waitresses are dressed up in a cafeteria Lawry's (Los Angeles Prime Rib place) style; service slow and spotty, food nothing to write home about. Not horrible. Just blah. The surroundings, on the other hand, are lovely. You'd be much better off walking a few metres east on the pedestrian street to Bolivar to the tiny cantina, el Huequito, for the best tacos al pastor anywhere in the city. Their especiale pastor is to die for. And 1/4 the price of Sanborns.

While this is the historic location of the first Sanborn's this is no Cafe de Tacuba. Bad cafeteria food+bad service.
