This small private museum is owned by the Slim family, who own a great number of businesses, including Sanborns and Telmex. The museum has four rooms, each with a distinct theme. The first has an exhibit of 18th- and 19th-century Mexican portraiture, the second the art of New Spain, including 18th-century ironwork. The Julián Slim Gallery has more than 100 sculptures by Auguste Rodin in marble, bronze, terra-cotta, and plaster. The last room displays a collection of works from such painters as Pierre Renoir, Camille Claudelle, and Paul Gauguin. The entrance and exit halls feature 1954 murals by Rufino Tamayo. Note that there are big plans in the works for this small museum. A new, ultramodern building has been designed by the Laboratory of Architecture, and is currently under construction. In 2009 the Soumaya collection will be housed in the Polanco neighborhood. Stay tuned for news!
