Open every day about 10-5, the bustling Mercado Artesanal La Ciudadela bursts with the widest range of wares and the best bargains in the capital. Browse through the crafts, from Talavera pottery, leather belts, guitars, tile-framed mirrors, hammocks, silverware, and papier-mâché skeletons to rugs, trays from Olinalá, and the ubiquitous sombrero. Prices are better than at most other crafts markets, but you can still haggle. Not only are prices good, but this is a fabulous market in which to wander around. If you are in the area on Saturday, head out of the market and watch the dancers across the street. In the open-air Plaza de la Ciudadela, enthusiasts from all over the city gather at around noon to dance danzón every Saturday. A number of casual restaurants serve up hearty set-menu lunches for $3-$5. Covered stalls take up a whole square, a 10-15-minute walk from the Alameda.
