Fodor's Expert Review Yuban

$$ La Roma Mexican

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

The cuisine of the state of Oaxaca is much revered throughout Mexico, though it can be discouragingly hard to find terrific examples of it in Mexico City. Yuban calls its food "comida casera zapoteca" (homemade Zapotecan food, one of Oaxaca's indigenous cultures), but the menu will look familiar to Oaxacan-food fans: chile de agua stuffed with turkey and nuts; banana-leaf-wrapped tamales; chapulines (crisp-fried grasshoppers); and usually most, if not all, of Oaxaca's seven primary mole sauces. The crowd is young and hip, enjoying the range of mezcals and artisanal Mexican beers; the decor is traditional but reads modern, with dark tile, natural wood, and handmade tableware.
