Playa Hotelera

Fodor's Review:

Oh, the madness of it all. Here you are in a beach destination with gorgeous weather and miles of clear blue water, yet you dare not dive into the sea. Most of San José's hotels line Playa Hotelera on Paseo Malecón San José, and brochures and Web sites gleefully mention beach access. But here's the rub—though the long, level stretch of coarse brown sand is beautiful, the currents can be dangerously rough, the drop-offs are steep and close to shore, and the waves often pound brutally up onto the shore. While surfers love this type of water and flock here in droves, it's extremely dangerous for the casual swimmer. Warning signs are posted up and down the beach, just in case your happen to forget. Feel free to walk along the beach to the Estero San José,play some beach volleyball, or enjoy a horseback ride along the shore. But for swimming, head to protected Playa Palmilla just a few miles west, in the Corridor.
