Why We Like It

Club El Moro is a bit of a trek from central downtown La Paz, but its setting midway between downtown and the area’s spectacular beaches makes it a convenient location for those seeking to explore both. Comfortable accommodations, affordable rates, and excellent service are among its other attractive qualities.

Fodor's Expert Review

Possibly the best bargain on the malecón, although a bit away from the city center itself, this vacation-ownership resort has very reasonable suite rentals on a nightly and weekly basis. Within El Moro you'll find a palm-filled garden and a densely landscaped pool area, though the pool itself is a bit shallow for much serious swimming. You can recognize the building by its stark-white turrets and domes. Rooms are Mediterranean in style, with arched windows, Mexican tiles, and private balconies; some have ocean views. A small café serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Fishing packages are available.

Room

The façade may be Moorish, but rooms showcase more of a homey Mexican feel, with cool tile flowers and regional art and accents.

Tip The coolest accommodation option is a suite with a built-in loft, but couples or families traveling together may prefer the two-bedroom master suite.

Bathroom

Bathrooms offer both comfort and privacy, with sinks, mirrors, and built-in hair dryers set apart from toilets and tiled walk-in showers.

Lobby

The lobby makes a great first impression: anchored by a large rotunda with hanging chandelier and multi-colored lights, it also features an impressive collection of warm, wood-carved furniture.

Pool

A charming wooden bridge crosses over the middle of the swimming pool, which is bounded by a picturesque lounge area with rock gardens and plenty of palm trees. Guests may also relax in one of the two jacuzzis.

Dining

Dinner hours were recently added at Vrentino Restaurant, an eatery already notable for its fresh baked goods, American style breakfasts, and its al fresco dining area with views of the malecón and Bay of La paz.

Drinking

Mexican wines from Valle de Parras and Valle de Guadalupe provide sipping pleasure, and add to the pairing options at Vrentino.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Rental cars are a necessity for visits to Playas Pichilingue, Balandra, and El Tecolote (their distance from the city center makes taxis prohibitively expensive), and are the most comfortable option for road trips to regional destinations like El Triunfo, Todos Santos, and Los Cabos. Bus service does run frequently, however, from the downtown terminal, to both Todos Santos and cape cities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

Restaurants

Fresh local seafood meccas Bismarck-cito and Los Laureles are a short drive away (two and three-minutes, respectively, along Paseo Álvaro Obregón).

Bars

Aficionados of retro décor, eclectic music, and artisanal Mexican liquors will love La Miserable, a boutique bar and mezcalería on Belisario Dominguez (5-minutes by car).
