It's not directly on the beach, but this hotel in a quiet enclave along one of San José's main boulevard, is a darling find. The stucco buildings, which have tile murals of Diego Rivera paintings, frame a pool and palapa bar in a quiet enclave. The rooms were all renovated in mid-2007 and outfitted with indigenous Mexican artwork and textiles, and two new, romantic suites, El Troje and El Jacaranda, are situated poolside. In its previous life, El Troje was a Tarascan Indian bungalow that the Tropicana transplanted here from Michoacan. It's all about location, location, location here, the hotel is steps away from great shopping, across the street from numerous top restaurants, and a stone's throw from the new zócalo. Known for its Sunday brunch buffet.
