Mama's Royal Café (by day)/Felix Fine Mexican & Seafood Restaurant (by night)

Mama's Royal Café (by day)/Felix Fine Mexican & Seafood Restaurant (by night) Review

You can't possibly accuse this restaurant of modesty. But it does exhibit a sense of humor, claiming on the menu to be "probably the best breakfast restaurant in the whole country." Mama's serves up bountiful breakfasts of omelets, and poached eggs with avocado and ham. It also claims to serve the "World's Best French Toast"—a treasure stuffed with cream cheese, strawberries, mangoes, or bananas, along with pecans. It's then topped off with an orange liqueur, so it may just be deserving of this claim. The fried potatoes are also superb. At night, the colorful restaurant becomes Felix, serving chiles en nogada (chilies in walnut sauce), pozole (pork soup with hominy, onion, garlic, dried chilies, and cilantro), and other Mexican specialties along with a lineup of more than 30 unusual salsas daily (the owner is a salsa pro). Owner Spencer Moore shares all the cooking and salsa "secrets" on the restaurant's Web site.

We went to Mama's for breakfast two days ago and had a terrible experience. Their website had offered coupons for free fresh orange juice with your meal (which they've since changed in the last two days). The coupon said "print as many as you want, no restrictions apply." After I handed the server coupons for four juices, the bill came back charging me $14 dollars for them. When I asked why they were included on the bill and asked to see a manager, the owner (an American) came out and said "I can't be giving out free orange juice!" I said I expected him to live up to what his coupons had so clearly promised - and which had encouraged me to go. He saidit was a mistake and there was no way he was going to honor his own coupons. I told him it was outrageous and a blatant bait and switch. He was condescending and incredibly rude, arguing with me at length right in front of his other customers. When I refused to be taken advantage of, he eventually relented and they took them off the bill - but he told me we were never welcome in his restaurant again (not that I would ever consider returning). I urge people to avoid this place like the plague. He was the only person in a five day visit to Cabo who tried to rip us off.

One of the best breakfast places in the world. A wonderful menu with many, many, many good selections. My wife and I drove into town and ate at Mama's every day during our six day stay in Cabos San Lucas. It's a little hard to find the first time because it shares space with Felix's restaurant, which uses it at night. But it's right across from Maro's Shrimp Factory on Hildago St. A true don't miss eating experience.
