Playa Grande Resort
Av. Playa Grande #1, Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur 23450, México
This large, multicolor all suite hotel complex on the beach next to the original Solmar property (which is now an all-inclusive) looks a bit Las Vegas, even by Cabo standards but, it's got all kinds of activities and facilities, making it a great family vacation option. The quarters in the 100-room Ridge wing offer eagle-eye views of both the marina and the Pacific beyond, and the mostly two- and three-bedroom suites are beautifully decorated with tasteful, modern Mexican decor.
The Mexican décor may seem a bit dated, but the rooms are clean, comfortable, and offer a wealth of suite style touches, from a kitchenette and dining room table to sofas with pull-out beds.
Kitchenette amenities include a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and blender.
Double sinks are a Solmar signature, but this is one of the few local resorts where bathtubs and showers are combined.
Playa Grande’s lobby is notable both for its nautical flair, exemplified by an enormous painting of a Spanish galleon overlooking the check-in area, and a towering rotunda complete with a central oculus.
For guests looking to stock their kitchenette, some food items are available at the lobby store, and many more may be found at the nearby organic grocery, California Ranch Market.
The V-shaped resort widens towards Solmar Beach, with the outdoor space in-between given over to restaurants and a series of large swimming pools. The elevated and luxurious Ridge at Playa Grande, meanwhile, boasts the most impressive collection of infinity pools in Cabo San Lucas, with breathtaking wrap-around views of the city and both the Sea of Cortés and Pacific Ocean.
The Spa at Playa Grande may be the resort’s signature amenity. It’s a superbly pampering facility featuring a beauty salon and an elevator to whisk guests upstairs to private treatment rooms. An outdoor adjunct is home to massage cabañas and a domed, wood-heated sweat lodge for Temazcal, an ancient therapy that dates to the days of the Aztecs.
The beauty products stocked at the spa are primarily sourced from Paul Mitchell and Natura Bissé.
Treadmills and elliptical machines are never in short supply at the onsite fitness center, which also showcases a variety of free weights, resistance style machines, and cardio accessories.
Additional cardio is available via the onsite tennis court.
All-inclusive pleasures at Playa Grande include Latin style cuisine at Calima; locally sourced seafood at Sushi-Sun; seafood, Mexican specialties, and spectacular ocean views at Brigantine; and gorgeous panoramic views at the exclusive Ridge Restaurant. Nightly themed buffets are another attractive option.
Guests may belly up to the poolside bar for umbrella-garnished cocktails, or enjoy craft beer while watching the big game in the stylishly appointed Sports Bar, located just off the lobby.
Set near Land’s End, Playa Grande is proximate to the Cabo San Lucas and only a short walk from the shopping and dining of downtown Cabo San Lucas. Water taxis are recommended for trips to Playa El Médano, and buses or cars are a necessity to visit San José del Cabo, or day trip destinations like Todos Santos and La Paz.
Drinking and dining are included in Playa Grande’s all-inclusive plan, but those seeking outside tasting opportunities should consider the fine Italian fare at Romeo y Julieta (5-minute walk), the fresh seafood and wood-fired pizzas at Captain Tony’s (10-minute walk), or the traditional Mexican delights at Los Tres Gallos (10-minutes by taxi).
Señor Frog’s at nearby Plaza Gali (5-minute walk) is a popular cocktail destination. Beer lovers may want to catch a panga to Playa El Médano (10-minutes by water taxi) to sample the offerings at Baja Brewing Company’s rooftop location at Cachet Beach Hotel.
