Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo Travel Guide

Getting Here and Around

Aeropuerto de Zihuatanejo is 12 km (8 mi) southeast of Zihua. Private cab fares range from $22 to $29. The bus station is in Zihua, with service to Manzanillo (8–9 hours), Acapulco (7 hours), Morelia (3½ hours), and Mexico City (7 hours). Driving south from Manzanillo on Carretera 200 is a gorgeous seven-hour trip that twists along mostly undeveloped coast.

The four-hour Zihua–Acapulco leg on Carretera 200 passes through small towns and coconut groves. Minibuses run every 10–15 minutes between the Ixtapa hotels and downtown Zihua until 10 pm; the fare is about 50¢. Cabs (unmetered) are easy to hail on the street in Zihua; the fare to Ixtapa is $4–$5. In town, a car only comes in handy if you plan to take day trips, as cab fares can be expensive (as much as $25 one way to Troncones from Ixtapa's resorts).
