Tonalá
Among the region's oldest pueblos is quiet Tonalá, a place of dusty cobblestone streets and stucco-covered adobe dwellings. Although it's been swallowed by ever-expanding Guadalajara, Tonalá remains independent and industrious; more geared to business than pleasure, it doesn't have the folksy feel of nearby Tlaquepaque. Except for a concentration of shops on Avenida de los Tonaltecas, the main drag into town, most of Tonalá's shops and factories are spread out. Many stores open daily 10-2 and 4-7. Some no longer close for a siesta, but some are closed on Monday. On Thursday and Sunday, bargain-priced merchandise is sold at a street market packed with vendors from 8 am to 4 pm (Thursday is less crowded than Sunday).
The town has unusually long blocks, so wear your most comfortable walking shoes.
