Chinkultik
46 km (29 mi) southeast of Comitán.
It's a steep hike of about 15 or 20 minutes to the hilltop pyramid that crowns this Maya city. From here you're rewarded with a fabulous view of sheer cliffs that drop into a sparkling lake. In the distance you can see the Lagos de Montebello. The ruins, which are only partially restored, also include a ball court and ceremonial center.
To get here from Comitán, head south on Carretera 190, and turn left at the sign reading "lagos de montebello" outside of La Trinitaria. There's a road on the left leading to the ruins, which are 2 km (1 mi) off the highway. Driving is the best way to get here. A bus runs from Comitán, but you have a long walk to get to the site.
Carretera a Lagos de Montebello, Km 30. $3. Daily 10-4.
