Fodor's Review

Although it has few facilities, this hotel is still a great value, with impeccable rooms set around an open-air garden courtyard where trees grow past the third floor. Dark cedar furniture sets off queen-size beds, and shared patios and spacious bathrooms come in above Mariposa's price class. Breakfast is served across the street at La Vagabunda restaurant, although suites have full kitchens where you can make your own. A small handicrafts and art boutique is attached

to the hotel, and the beach is just a few blocks away. If the hotel is fully booked, check out their neighboring sister property, Hacienda Mariposa, less charming but equally affordable.

Posada Mariposa is a Fading Butterfly

I don't know what year the original reviewer was there, because while this little hotel was quite adequate, it is a far cry from what is described in the original review! The hotel is clean but not impeccable; the fountain in the "garden" (garden is about 10 feet square) no longer operates. There are NO ocean views except maybe the suite at the top - - there have been large hotels built on the oceanfront that block all views. Our room faced the street

running perpendicular to the beach; I don't know how that could be construed as an ocean view! Each room has chairs and, if lucky, a table outside the door, but no patios per se. To watch the sunset from the roof you must also view many rooftops etc (there is no horizon to see)and the rooftop has not been maintained enough to be comfortably used. The bathrooms are far from luxurious, but are very adequate and well maintained. Our towels were fine, not threadbare. The lighting in the room was VERY poor. The A/C was excellent, and there was cable TV and a fridge in each room. Staff was friendly and helpful. Wonderful location--quiet but near everything. Because I would like a larger garden to sit in and a small pool to cool off in, I do not plan to return to this hotel. If not for these reasons, however, I would consider returning.

Posada Mariposa, Playa Del Carmen

Your description of the bathrooms being luxureous were highly exaggerated! The bathroom that I had was bare minimum, shower(no bathtub) toilet and sink. Shower curtain thin plastic sheet. Towels tattered. The place was clean and away from noise though. No view of the ocean as you also stated all rooms had.
