Hotel El Rey del Caribe Review

Thanks to the use of solar energy, a water-recycling system, and composting toilets, this unique hotel has very little impact on the environment—and its luxuriant garden blocks the heat and noise of downtown. Hammocks hang poolside, and wrought-iron tables and chairs dot the grounds. There's artwork throughout the property, much of which was painted by the owner herself (who lives on-site). Standard rooms are small and very outdated (think lace curtains and floral bedding) but all have kitchenettes with a stovetop and mini-fridge. The newest accommodations, known as the executive rooms, are larger and have hardwood floors. A great feature is the tiny spa, where you can book honey massages that cost a third of what they do in the Zona Hotelera. El Centro's shops and restaurants are within walking distance.

Beautiful courtyard, great aromatherapy massage, friendly staff. I wish we had spent more time in Cancun, if only to spend a day or two lounging in a hammock by the pool or indulging in spa treatments. Highly recommended.
