Excellence Playa Mujeres Review

North of mainland Cancún, this adults-only resort has redefined the all-inclusive concept. Gone are the days of wristbands and cheap alcohol, and in their place are two-story suites, each with a private terrace and hydro pool. Upon arrival, guests are greeted curbside with champagne and refreshing towels, fragranced with a hint of lavender. In the lobby, onyx pillars jet from two-toned marble floors, overshadowed only by a massive stained-glass ceiling illuminated from above. Every room has a terrace and hot tub. Included in the nine international restaurants are a sushi bar, lobster house, and New York–style deli. Reminiscent of a Greek temple, the wellness spa features private relaxation rooms, heated waterbeds, and a 12-step hydrotherapy circuit. Dotting the seven swimming pools are hammocks and palapas, and a man-made river winds throughout the entire property. For those seeking a break from the sun, there are classes available in cooking, Spanish language, dancing, archery, and air-rifle shooting. Attached to the hotel grounds are an 18-hole golf course and a junglelike habitat housing local wildlife. As if that weren't enough, the hotel offers sunset excursions on its private yacht. Although Hotel Excellence bills itself as being in Playa Mujeres, it's actually in the town of Punta Sam. It's a 15-minute drive from Cancún's El Centro proper, and 30 minutes from the heart of the Zona Hotelera.

    Excellence Playa Mujeres Review

I just returned from a 5-night stay at the Excellence Playa Mujeres and am still in awe at how amazing it was.

I booked my trip through a travel agent who suggested this all-inclusive, even though I wasn't necessarily looking for all-inclusive as I previously was unimpressed with them and would rather pay more for a nicer resort and pay for meals/drinks ala carte if it made for a better experience. To keep this review short, I'll simply topline the key reasons for my wonderful experience.

Service - Every staffer, from the valet who greeted us, to the concierge, wait staff and even maintenance workers who passed us, were incredibly polite, always smiling and knowledgable.

Property/Accomodations - As nice as the photos on their website are, they do not do it justice. The rooms were mostly marble with beautiful amenities, furniture, fixtures, etc. and were more in line with what I have experienced at four-star resorts than an all-inclusive. The many bars and restuarants were equally as impressive.

Food/Drink - This was my biggest concern going with an all-inclusive as I dine out often and have little tolerance for poor food choices or preparation. I can only say that every meal we ate, whether it was basic breakfast or the filet and chilean sea bass my friend and I enjoyed at the french restaurant (one of seven different dining options on the premises), the quality of the ingredients and preparation were equivalent to restaurants I would dine in at home in NYC. Contrary to what you would expect from an all-inclusive, the wait staff and even room service receptionist actually encouraged you to order multiple items per person, rather than limit the number of apps/entrees you may order. This was also the case with towels. They didn't force you to check in/out towels and pretty much let you take as many as needed.

I would also add that all liquor is premium/top shelf (Grey Goose, Don Julio, Remy and Hennessy, etc.) and that includes the liquor in the mini-bar, which, to my surprise, was included as well.

Candidly, I joked with a few other guests that we don't see how they can stay in business offering such high quality food/liquor/amenities for what we paid, but we hope they stay around for a while as I certainly intend to return.

In addition to the above, the entertainment was also impressive, with a Michael Jackson tribute one night and two themed outdoor buffet evenings during our stay.

I would highly recommend this resort and encourage potential visitors to at least have their travel agents look into it as an option.
