Fodor's Expert Review Grand Hotel Cancun Managed by Kempinski
Retorno del Rey 36, Cancún, Quintana Roo, 77500, Mexico Fodor's Choice
The former Ritz-Carlton was taken over by Kempinski in the fall of 2022; outfitted with crystal chandeliers, beautiful antiques, and oil paintings, this hotel's style is so European you may forget you're in Mexico. Renovated rooms are done in understated shades of gray and cream, with wall-to-wall carpeting, large balconies overlooking the Caribbean, and marble bathrooms; for complete indulgence, opt for Club Level accommodations, which include use of a private lounge that serves fine food and unlimited cocktails throughout the day. The Presidential Suite has been completely redesigned with an open concept and modern, contemporary decor. The seven restaurants here are uniformly excellent. The resort boasts Cancún's only on-the-beach dining, plus a culinary center, where guests can take cooking classes or dine with the chef. The overall atmosphere here is fairly conservative, and it's one of few that charges for children's activities.

- all rooms have sea views
- tennis center
- cooking classes and tequila tastings
- turtle-release program May–October
CONS
- formal atmosphere
- expensive
