You might find it bewildering to choose among Cancún's many hotels, not least because brochures and Web sites make them sound—and look—almost exactly alike. For luxury and amenities, the Zona Hotelera is the place to stay. Boulevard Kukulcán, the district's main thoroughfare, is artfully landscaped with palm trees, sculpted bushes, waterfalls, and tiered pools. The hotels pride themselves on delivering endless opportunities for fun; most have water sports, golf, tennis, kids' clubs, fitness centers, spas, shopping, entertainment, dining, and tours and excursions (along with warm attentive Mexican service). None of this comes cheaply, however; hotels here are expensive. In the modest Centro, local color outweighs facilities. The hotels there are more basic and much less expensive than those in the Zona.
