On Mexico Time

On Mexico Time

Mexicans are far more relaxed about time than their counterparts north of the border. Although mañanatranslates as "tomorrow," it is often used to explain why something is not getting accomplished. In this context, mañanameans, "Relax-it'll get taken care of.. eventually." Since the devastating hit of Hurricane Wilma in 2005, the reconstruction of Cancún has redefined Mexico as a fast-track country. Although smaller villages in Yucatán may still embrace the mañanamentality, the pace throughout Cancún and Quintana Roo is certainly quickening. It is still a good idea, however, to anticipate that many set appointments will start 30 minutes behind schedule.

The trick to enjoying life on Mexican time is: don't rush. And be sure to take advantage of the siesta break between 1 and 4 PM. How else are you going to stay up late dancing?
