Tijuana

Safety and Precautions

Petty crime has always been a significant problem here; moreover, in the last few years, Tijuana has become headquarters for serious drug cartels, and violent crime is booming. Since 2008, the U.S. State Department has issued travel advisories regarding travel to Mexico, making special note of the increased drug violence in Tijuana. Until the situation ameliorates, visitors would do best to avoid Tijuana altogether (by flying into Ensenada or entering at the Tecate border), or to skip the city center by taking the Ensenada highway immediately upon entering Mexico from San Diego.

If you do find yourself in Tijuana for an evening, have hotels and restaurants call taxis directly, and avoid strolling the streets at night.
