Making reservations ahead of time, especially during high season, from November through May, can save you time and money, and ensure that your experience is that much more pleasant. Hotels fill up quickly around whale-watching season (Dec.-Apr.), spring break, and the Baja 1000 race in November. Small hotels often give better rooms and rates to advance bookings. If you're driving through Baja California, make provisions in case your car breaks down. Bring plenty of water, some energy bars, and a warm blanket along with extra oil, gas, and everything that you need to change a tire. There are long stretches of highway where your cell phone won't get reception.
