Baja California Sur technically begins in the north around the dusty little town of Guerrero Negro, encompassing everything southward. The state's remote northern areas are riddled with cave paintings, while the larger, easterly towns of Loreto and La Paz have beautiful beaches and excellent fishing opportunities, as well as missions and museums. The lush Western and Eastern capes are meccas for water-sport enthusiasts of every ilk, while Todos Santos has a booming art scene, and is renowned among surfers. All major cities are accessible from Carretera Transpeninsular, or Highway 1, and the farther you venture from the highway, the smaller the towns become.
