Fodor's Review

Restored to its original 1950s glamour, this perennial favorite has snappy rooms with white-tile floors and modern bathrooms. There's a beachside restaurant with an outstanding breakfast buffet, a more elegant indoor restaurant, and a gorgeous pool that not only seems to float above the bay, but also has whirlpools built into its corners.

Great place to stay

We'd definitely go back to the Elcano. The hotel itself is nice and the rooms are clean and spacious. Not to mention the great views. All rooms have balconies that overlook the beach/ocean. The staff was friendly and courteous. The only real problem we had was with our mini bar. They keep it locked and you have to call someone from the front desk to come and unlock it everytime you open it. We just wanted to put some bottles of water in it,

but they insisted on keeping it locked. I guess they've had problems with guests taking things and not paying. Other than that, this hotel was superb.

Service was wonderful

Stayed at this hotel Jan. 2001. I liked the blue and white theme throughout the hotel, very classic. Service from everyone was great; they didn't hover and they didn't ignore. The Bambuco restaurant was the place for breafast every morning for me, beachside and breezy. Highlight of this hotel is that ALL rooms are either ocean view (lower floor rooms) or ocean front rooms (higher floor rooms). Most rooms had balcony but some had floor to ceiling windows

which opened anyway onto the breataking view. Rooms still carried the blue and white theme, kinda nautical and floors were tiled which felt nice on the feet. Rooms were quite large I thought. The pool was quite nice, not sure if it was heated but it was the perfect temperature. Staff was very accomodating. At one point, when my safe deposit box in the office was jammed, they said they had to get a repairman to open it; I thought to myself "Yeah right, this will take all day". To my surprise, he was there within ten minutes. The beach in front of the hotel was very clean but unfortunetly very busy with vendors which will NOT leave you alone though no fault of the hotel. Best time to swim in the ocean was around 9am; before the sea doo's created big waves. Although I did not have to pay for the hotel (it was an incentive), I would definetly pay to stay here again. Lots of of restaurants and shopping within walking distance.
