Car Travel

The only paved road on Roatán runs the length of the island as far east as Oak Ridge and to the western tip of the island at West Bay. There are a number of unpaved, unmarked roads leading to various settlements on the southern and northern shores. These are graded from time to time but can be difficult to navigate, particularly if it has been raining. It's not recommended to explore off the main road unless you know exactly where you are headed. Outside Coxen Hole, most of the roads have no street lights and are hard to navigate at night. Working brake lights and turn signals can be a rarity on the island, so drive carefully and always be aware of your fellow drivers.

Car Rental

Renting a car is a popular, if pricey, option on Roatán. The average cost is L880 per day for sedans and L1,320 and up for pickups and SUVs. Well-regarded local companies include Best Car Rental and Caribbean Rent a Car. There is rarely insurance on the cars, so be prepared to pay for any damage that occurs. Renting scooters and motorcycles is only recommended for those with prior riding experience since the main road functions as the highway, so riders must keep up with the flow of traffic. Scooter accidents are common, with tourists often not prepared for the unpredictable road traffic.
