Puerto Cortes

Puerto Cortés is best known as Honduras's largest port, although the city is slowly but steadily rebranding itself as a tourist destination. The town was founded in 1524 as the Villa de Puerto Caballos, and it now handles nearly all of the country's imports and exports. Just an hour's drive from San Pedro Sula, the port city is the top weekend getaway for families and professionals living in the economic capital, and many foreigners stay for the week on business. Puerto Cortés is increasingly attracting travelers who are en route to Belize or Guatemala, or who are stopping by from Omoa in search of ATMs and the Garífuna beaches. Avoid visiting during Holy Week, when the town of 47,000 people receives some 200,000 extra people.
