Taxi Travel

Most Guatemalan cities are small enough to walk around, but taxis can be a good idea late at night or for longer trips. Meters are the norm in Guatemala City; everywhere else you need to agree upon your fare in advance. Wherever possible, get your hotel or restaurant to call you a cab, otherwise try to pick vehicles with a clearly painted number on the side, which means they're registered. Taxis in many communities are covered, three-wheeled Bajaj vehicles manufactured in India. Locals refer to them as tuk-tuks. You can often hire a taxi for a day or half-day trip, and many willingly shuttle you between Guatemala City and Antigua for $35. Taxi drivers aren't generally willing to change large bills, so carry enough for your trip and a small tip.
