Safety in Antigua and Western Highlands

Safety

Antigua is one of Guatemala's safest cities, and the streets around Parque Central are patrolled by the municipal and tourist police. Farther from the square you should walk in groups or take taxis after the sun goes down. Be careful in the countryside, where there have been some robberies. If you plan to tackle one of the nearby volcanoes, hire a reputable guide and ask what safety precautions the company takes.

Several groups of travelers have been robbed while hiking around the Lago Atitlán area. It is always a good idea to hire a guide, especially when you are not familiar with your destination. In Quetzaltenango and Chichicastenango it is best to avoid the areas outside the city center at night as gang activity is reportedly on the rise.
